Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was young, her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she quit school in the span of two years of school to take on a acting career. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got an interview in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs were offered to her. Then in NYC, she was employed in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet as an usherette during the day while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She was a drama student in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
